As I may have mentioned one or two times before, me and my good friend Chris like to go hiking in the Peak district. This in mind, we are always on the look out for good breakfast and lunch spots to fuel our bodies with. Today we tried out The Birdhouse Tea Bar and Kitchen.
Because we like to hit the trails early, we like to get our brekkie at around the 8am mark, so you can imagine, on a weekday this is a bit of a challenge. Well, luckily for us, that’s when The Birdhouse opens so we showed up just as the lovely ladies were unlocking their doors and were greeted by warm smiles.
The Birdhouse is a great space, placed in a courtyard on Sidney Street just outside of town. This bright and modern café has a great atmosphere that welcomes you in straight away, with upstairs and downstairs seating and even a shop attached selling all of their delicious tea blends.
Now I believe we came on the wrong day, as they were having some electrical work done in the kitchen and the girls behind the bar were quick to apologise with the lack of available options on the menu. However, we didn’t feel like this hindered our experience in any way, the women who served us were extremely attentive and took the time out to talk through their menu and what they had available and what could be done, and were so friendly and chatty that in our opinion, it didn’t even matter what we were given, we were just happy to be sat in such a nice spot! I ordered a turmeric chai latte and Chris opted for a regular latte. We ordered a couple of stuffed croissants- I went with the mushroom and smoked cheese, and a smoothie bowl with homemade granola.
Don’t get me wrong, I would have LOVED, to try their coconut pancakes, and I know Chris had his heart set on the veggie breakfast, but our croissants were gorgeous! Light, fluffy and buttery with great fillings these giant pastries were exactly the kind of start we needed for our day, and the smoothie bowl made me feel a lot less guilty about eating them! The options on the menu were so varied, I am looking forward to going back and trying more of their breakfasts (and lunches!) they offer a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian options so it is a completely friendly-for-all café!
Not only do they have a fantastic tea bar & shop, they also stock a lot of other local café’s and shops with their magnificent teas! I spied a few of their flavours at The Incredible Nutshell on Chesterfield Road and was really pleased to see a strong sense of community within the independent businesses of Sheffield – And further a-field. The brownies they have on display on their counter are not only a threat to your diet but are also Vegan! Ask at the bar for what flavours they have on offer.
I’m looking forward to returning to The Birdhouse, hopefully on a day they aren’t having work done, because I REALLY want to try those pancakes! If you’re in the area, go check them out, and keep an eye on their instagram for upcoming events! I’ve heard their next themed pudding club is a FORCE to be reckoned with 😉
