We’ve been visiting the Devonshire Arms at Beeley for just over a year now. Every Monday, Chris and I go for a walk around every inch of the Peak District – mainly because we are lost and have no other option – and we always start the day right by fuelling our bodies with a big breakfast with the intention of burning it off up a mountain or walking in circles for hours, and our favourite has got to be from The Devonshire Arms.
Beeley is a small village in what we believe to be quite a central part of Derbyshire, largely because we have started many of our weeks at that same table at breakfast and headed off to pretty much every trail in the peak district. We often come in to find the same staff there to greet and seat us, knowing we aren’t residents at the hotel after the first few weeks of us just turning up and being shown to our usual table by the window, overlooking a stream and a view of the quiet street with very little footfall or traffic, very serene.
The décor is fresh and bright, and due to the large windows that wall one side of the restaurant they give off a very natural feel to the place, teamed with the colourful light shades and pink strip lighting subtly wrapping the coving in the ceiling, it modernises the Devonshire Arm’s ‘old country pub’ feel into a very stylish and clearly popular eating establishment.
Now the breakfast menu at The Devonshire Arms is quite small, and all through last year didn’t change. You would think that would put some people off, however, the ingredients they use are sourced directly from Chatsworth Estate, which has a farm shop and is, dare I say, very posh. The ingredients are fresh and the portions are BIG! Despite there only being a few options, we would always struggle to decide, usually opting for the vegetarian full English, smoked salmon and hollandaise or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon (and caviar) and never being disappointed.
A year is a long time to explore Derbyshire, so we would sometimes deviate further a field and ramble around South Yorkshire or, yes I’m going to brag, climb a couple mountains like Snowdon or Scafell Pike! So, there may have been a period where we didn’t visit our most loved breakfast spot, and I’ve got to say… We missed it.
On our return, after musing on the way there about which breakfast we would be having, vegetarian or salmon today? We parked in the same space outside the main entrance and walked through the low ceiling pub to the breakfast area to be greeted by the same friendly faces we were used to before! We sat down after pouring ourselves a glass of juice from the continental buffet area and were given some coffee and jokingly picked up the menu to assess.
That’s when we realised the menu had changed. Shock and delight! Still retaining our much-loved favourites but with some new and exciting choices! But then the hard part was choosing which one we would have off this brand-new menu. I mean, we knew whatever we had would be good because the one thing you can rely on here, is the consistency. But that didn’t make the choice any easier. I was stuck between the classic smashed avocado and poached egg on sourdough and the huevos rancheros, which is a particular favourite of mine. In the end I couldn’t decide and put my choices to the waitress who reminded me… who doesn’t love avocado.
I was over the moon when my dish came out, displaying simplicity and elegance in their presentation, The Devonshire Arms have done it again. A really, REALLY good breakfast. I don’t know how many other people nervously pick up their knife for the ‘yolk test’, going in for the slow, blunt pierce to check how runny your egg is, but there is absolutely no need for worry here, I confidently mash my egg into my toast and pretty much inhale my breakfast. Looks like I’m going to go back and have the huevos rancheros now! -What a hard life.
I would strongly recommend you go check out the Devonshire arms, they have beautiful guest rooms if you’re travelling from a far, with plenty of walking trails nearby, I would happily recommend my favourites if you get in touch via the ‘contact me’ page! THE Devonshire Arms also offer lunch and evening meals and if you go check out their website here. You will see how amazing the food is, so go try it for yourself!
